Individually built vehicles rarely fit into rigid standard processes. That is exactly why they need an approval strategy from the beginning — one that brings together donor vehicle, depth of modification, use case and target market in a consistent way.

For new one-off vehicles, EU individual vehicle approval under Article 44 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858 can be relevant, alongside national individual pathways depending on the case. In Germany, the KBA is the authority responsible for EU individual vehicle approvals.

Can a custom-built one-off vehicle actually be approved?

Yes, in principle. But it needs the right approval pathway and correct preparation. The EU framework expressly provides for EU individual vehicle approvals, and in Germany those are handled by the KBA.

When should homologation start?

Ideally before the final build specification is frozen. Early regulatory planning prevents expensive redesign loops later.

Do you also support conversions based on existing vehicles?

Yes. We assess the donor vehicle, the extent of modification and the required evidence as one integrated package.
